Medicare indications for ultrasound scans during pregnancy: Item number 55704

Pregnancy is 12 to 16 weeks of gestation and one or more of the following conditions are present. A written request is needed from a medical practitioner for an ultrasound scan to be performed.

This is not a comprehensive or complete list of conditions. Some of the more common conditions are listed below:

Condition associated with pregnancy from 12 to 16 weeks gestation

A Diabetes mellitus
B Excessive vomiting of pregnancy
C Maternal infection
D Abdominal wall scarring from previous abdominal or pelvic surgery
E Significant maternal obesity
F Advanced maternal age, such as 35 years or more
G Abdominal pain or abdominal mass /lump
H Date of last menstrual period uncertain, unknown or vague
I High risk pregnancy
J Previous Caesarean section delivery
K Menstrual or vaginal bleeding or spot bleeding during early pregnancy
L Suspicion of ectopic or tubal pregnancy
M Risk of miscarriage
N Diminished symptoms of pregnancy
O Risk of fetal abnormality
P Pregnancy after assisted reproduction or IVF pregnancy
