Medicare indications for ultrasound scans during pregnancy: Item number 55718

Pregnancy is after 22 weeks gestation and one or more conditions are present. A written request is needed from a medical practitioner for an ultrasound scan to be performed.

This is not a comprehensive or complete list of conditions. Some of the more common conditions are listed below:

Conditions associated with pregnancy after 22 weeks gestation

A Abdominal pain or mass/ lump
B Vaginal spot bleeding or menstrual bleeding during pregnancy
C Reduced fetal movements
D Suspected fetal death
E Suspicion of reduced fetal growth size
F Suspicion of a large for dates fetus size
G Previous fetal death in utero or neonatal death
H Previous Caesarean delivery/ uterine scar assessment
I Previous complicated delivery of baby
J Known or suspected fetal abnormality
K Fetal anatomy scan as in late pregnancy booking scan
L Suspected breech presentation or transverse lie of fetus
M Clinical suspicion of amniotic fluid volume abnormality
N Uterine fibroid suspected or known previously
O Diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure
P Premature labour
Q Pregnancy after assisted reproduction or IVF pregnancy
R Abdominal wall scarring from previous abdominal surgery
S Advanced maternal age, such as 35 years or more
T Significant maternal obesity
U Maternal infection or maternal cardiac disease
V Trauma as in falling over or being struck in the abdomen
W Suspicion of placental abnormality such as low lying placenta praevia
X Cervical assessment as in previous premature labour or delivery
